Together, the preserves cover more than 1,600 acres of scenic terrain, including woodlands, prairie, and wetlands, as well as two large lakes, Rice Lake and Herrick Lake, where fishing is permitted.

Herrick Lake Forest Preserve is a really nice option for some kayaking and hiking. In addition to kayaks, they also rent canoes and rowboats. There were lots of people hiking, bike riding, and fishing while we were there. The lake is not very large but there is a scenic bridge over a trail that leads to another small section of the lake.
